Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes the gallbladder with the use of small incisions and specialised surgical tools.
Understanding the Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Procedure
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves removing the gallbladder through small incisions in the abdomen. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and is considered a safe and effective treatment for gallstones and other conditions that affect the gallbladder.
To begin the procedure, your surgeon will make several small incisions in your abdomen and insert a laparoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light attached to it. The camera allows the surgeon to see inside the abdomen and guide the surgical instruments, which are inserted through the other incisions.
The gallbladder will then be carefully dissected and removed through one of these very small incisions. The procedure usually takes about an hour to complete. It will be performed while you are under general anesthesia, but this is considered a “day surgery” which means that you will be able to go home the same day.
